Right at this very moment, someone somewhere has no idea what she is doing and she is hiding behind crappy muzak while someone else solves my problem. I bet she gets back on like she's my hero, "OK sir, this is what we're going to do..." Oh, wait, here she is..... She says my phone must be defective (I guess that's why I've never had a problem with it... it all makes sense now) and that I should send it in to a warehouse in Miami. Maybe I should send my not-broken TV into the shop while I am at it. Customer service is a bigger pain than than a service. I know that I can answer the last one. I was in Mr. Jette's 7:00 am American Government class at Skyview High School in Billings, Montana. But, c'mon, is that really important, here. I won't ever be able to express the deep feelings of sympathy I have towards the vicitims and their families, but I can express how I feel about the way the situation was handled. (God, I hope no one takes this the wrong way. The events of 9/11 were the pinnicle of "cowardly," and in no way do I condone warfare of anykind. I write this with thoughts of peace). With that said, I also think that the United States government has handled this situation all wrong. "Yeah, the terrorists are all bloodthirsty evil murderers, ya know? So, since they got us, we're goin in there an' gettin um back twice as hard!" So basically, these people (and many innocent middle eastern civilians) are evil for assaulting the US of A, but we are heroic for going over there and doing the same thing? Its just all wrong, if you ask me. A punk rock band from Pittsburgh, called Anti-Flag, is criticized for being "anti-establishment" and "anti-America." And if you seriously believe this, you are sadly mistaken. Anti-Flag is "anti-violence." They are pro-peace, and if that is wrong, than I don't think that I want to be right. In response to 9/11, they penned a song titled "911 for Peace." Some of the lyrics:

This is a plea for peace (World Peace!) / To the oppressors of the world (and to...) / To the leaders of nations / Corporate profit takers / To the everyday citizen / Greed, Envy, Fear, Hate - the competition has to stop / When you see someone down - now's the time to pick 'em up / Set our differences aside and never look back! / [. . .] / We are all human / It's time to prove it

The song then leads in to a clip from Dr. Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Hey, didn't Dr. King say something about "all of God's children" joining hands and singing? Doesn't sound like "you got us, now we get you back" does it?

This kind of crap really upsets me. I don't see why we can't look at his life (especially the music that he gave to the world). I know I'd much rather listen to a Beatles record or a John Lennon one than worrying about what happened in December 1980.

Holy cow, I should have watched the rest of that Oakland game. Crap.

"It's as easy as falling off a weblog," by Chris Alden

Another standard blogging article. But, what are you gonna do, right?

Amber McNeal

Yeah, memorizing something just so you can spit it back onto a test paper is a really crappy way to learn. You rock, Mr. Shelin!

Randy Miller

I'm sorry, but I have to express an opinion here (seriously, its nothing personal). But I think an English paper (and I am talking about an analytical paper, here) needs to have good ideas and corect sentence structure. "Thinking outside the box" (or the bun, I suppose) is great, and, yes, thats how we come to new revolutions, but I think a high school student should be able to write a paper with some sort of structure.

The Blog by Evan

That is so right about what makes a good teacher. The best teachers I had in highschool were just like that. I think a lot of teachers are so bent on "preparing" us for college that they make their classrooms into a lecture hall (because "all of college is one big lecture hall," or so said many of my other teachers).

Leslie Walker

Well, I guess I've been wallowing in the "dot-com gloom." I think the public school system is missing out on the chance to teach computer literacy that is actually practical. In my high school, the only computer class was BASIC, which comes in handy if you don't want to use the calculator that already comes with your computer. A high school teacher can't just show up, throw the kids a textbook, and then sit behind a desk until the test. In my Junior year Honors English class, Mr. Bonawitz realized this. We had no tests, no daily grammer exercises, and no vocabulary lists. What we did have, however, were hour-long class discussions on the literature we were reading at the time and the paper that was due next week. That was the best English class that I have had, and, personally, I learned more by doing a whole lot less (less busy work, I mean.) Also, (and I know that I have already criticized my high school Spanish program, but...) Profe Zepeda, who was "mi profesor de espanol dos," is one of the most gifted educators I have ever met. He placed a heavy emphasis on participation (yeah, who would have thought that becoming involved with what you are doing would help you do it) and I am certain that everyone I know who have had Profe learned more from him (in Spainish and otherwise) than many other teachers.

Hey, if you're not down with Chewbacca, then I'm not down with you! His example of an infant fluently learning his or her mother tounge was interesting. We learn to speak in our native environment seemingly easily. Honestly, I had never heard of blogs until last Tuesday. Reading Rebecca Blood's article on the history of weblogs was ccertainly helpful. Maybe she has a bias towards weblogs--being a blogger herself--but she has a lot of helpful information for someone like me who has no blogging experience whatsoever.
